INTRODUCING COLLE'CTE AND THE DYNAMIC DUO BEHIND IT

Just when I was searching for something new upon my arrival to Tel Aviv, Colle'cte designer and co-founder, Tal Drori, reached out to me with mind-blowing photos of their brand.
I immediately remembered that I had seen their unique bags on the runway of Moscow fashion week; I was very intrigued. Despite the short notice, I was able to get an appointment.  I was so fascinated by all that this married couple created and managed right out of their Tel Aviv home, which also served as their studio.

The House of Colle’cte is a combination of two words in French: colle, which is glue and collecte, which is collection.  What started as a catchy business name for partners, Tal Drori and Assaf Shem-Tov, actually seems to fit as a perfect metaphor for not only their business, but also their married life.  “We glued together two minds, two different worlds into one,”  This dynamic duo is taking Israel, and the world, by storm, one bag at a time.  Without further ado, I am excited to bring to you an interview which delves into the mind of the Colle'cte brand.

How was the business idea born?
It all started during my final project at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design.  My professor recommended that I get some professional help to complete my clothing collection.  He gave me Assaf's number who, at the time, was head designer for Daniella Lehavi, a shoe and bag brand.  Working together, we created a small collection of bags.  At the time, he refused any payment from me for his services. A few years later, we were working as employees in fashion houses in Tel-Aviv.  We decided to continue what we started years ago back in 2009, which was to create art together.

The style of your bags is very unique, what's your inspiration?
Our inspirations are very wide and vary from shapes in nature to the history of fashion. Our strongest inspirations are armor, weapons and warrior woman from the 19th century in Europe, like Jeanne d’Arc, Urracá, Marie-Angélique-Joséphine Duchemin and widowed Brûlon. Assaf takes on the look of the bag and its construction and I handle the vibe, texture and female perspective.  Together, we combine our aesthetic and talents into one collection.  We've also had collections inspired by female rock stars and Dandy men (also known as beaus or gallants).  Our latest collection is inspired by sports.

Tell us about your most exciting collaborations
We've done a lot of collaborations with many Israeli designers. Every year, we try to do something new--something for our soul. Collaborating with other designers takes us to new and unexpected paths and also allows us to travel, which we love. For TLV fashion week, we collaborated with a local bridal and evening gown designer to create a collection of evening handbags and clutches which was sponsored by Swarovski. We also recently did a collaboration with fashion designer Yosef, which included a 20 piece clothing collection, 3 jewelry pieces utilizing silver and leather and 6 handbags which were inspired by The Alchemist.  We sold them in boutiques here in Israel, and were even invited to present them at Mercedes Benz FashionWeek in Moscow.

Can you share with us some details about Moscow Fashion Week?

It was an amazing experience for us to take part in this big, elegant event.  Witnessing all the behind-the-scenes elements of this event was amazing because we are considered an accessory brand and don't usually get to feature in fashion shows.  It was certainly a memorable week in Moscow.

You participated in a shoe exhibition called Cinderella Syndrome,  currently running in Tel Aviv, where you designed a bag in the form of shoe?!

Yes, the bag is our personal interpretation of a stiletto shoe. We call it New Balance; the space between elegance and pain. As we know, fashion dictated that women were subject to pain throughout history.  This is true, even with stilettos, due to the relationship of human anatomy and the foot.  It highlights both human balance and weight on high heels. We wanted to create a bag that challenges gravity; one that highlights the juxtaposition of balance vs. imbalance.

What's your most popular bag?

We have several best sellers, but our most popular bag is our ball bag. I know this very well because we produce it in our studio by hand, every single one of them.  To date, we cannot find a factory that makes them as perfectly as we do in our studio.  We produce the bag in many colors and also offer variations, such as the choice of 1 to 6 tassels. We created the ball bag back in 2012, but decided to adjust its diameter when the iPhone 6 was unveiled in 2015 due to its worldwide popularity.

When you design your bags, what kind of customer you have in mind?

Actually, our customers inspire us.  We design for the state of mind of a cool, vibrant, urban woman. Sometimes very classy and other times avant-garde, we want our bags to be comfortable and user-friendly, and yet still have a different look and vibe. We strive to give the handbag world a different look altogether.

Your husband is your business partner, can you tell us how is this working for you?

Its very natural and normal for us; we like it.  We both have our parts and we truly complete each other. Many people ask me about this and I always say, "Yes, it takes a very specific character to do it, and for most couples, I know it's not recommended."  We worked together before we were a couple, and we like to be together at work and at home.

After seeing this brand in person and witnessing the impeccable craftsmanship, leather quality, hardware and interior of each bag,  I decided to add Colle'cte to my personal bag collection.  A Colle'cte bag is more than worth its investment; its a great value for the price and a piece of art all on its own.  For me, the Small Uracca and Large Uracca bag below are both unique and practical at the same time.  Since it be customized, I am ordering mine in white leather.  I am sure once it arrives, you will see lots of it on my Instagram and also here on Tel Aviv Couture.

MEET SACKPACK 22, THE MOST STYLISH BACKPACKS AROUND

I don't know about you, but out of all my designer handbags, I often prefer carrying my SackPack.  Discovered in Isreal on a recent trip, this drawstring bag is one of the most convenient items I own.  Not only is it incredibly stylish and fits everything I need, but I also appreciate having my hands free, whether I am out with the babies, enjoying an outdoor festival or concert, at the beach, on a bike or  sporting event.

Sold online for $70, the quality, selection and price are incomparable.  Also part of their collection is the Mini SackPack (priced at $60) and the ultra sleek laptop Dylans bags (sold for $100)

We caught up with the SackPack22 company in Isreal to ask a few questions:

1.   Tell us about the inspiration behind the SackPack, the materials used and
the many color options you offer.

Ever since the 80's, I have been a fan of sackpacks; I myself used to wear one as child.  As an adult, I thought, "the bags aren't nice enough, they aren't well designed for today." So, in the summer of 2013, we changed that.  We took the fabric that people use for bags today, like PU leather, canvas and quilting and made it more fashionable; we gave it more color, more texture, more street style.   Our original SackPack comes in 80 colors; people sometimes spend hours in our store in Isreal trying to decide on which SackPack they will buy.  In Tel Aviv, you see 15 year olds wearing our SackPacks as well as 65 year old women.  You will also see fashionable men wearing our SackPacks. We love that!

2.  Tell us about the Mini SackPack as well as the Dylans bags you carry -- do these collections have different uses in mind?

Yes, the Mini SackPack is a stylish option for anyone who leaves the house with just a few items -- like a phone, keys, sunglasses and wallet.  We offer it in 15 different colors.    Our Dylans bag, on the other hand, is meant for carrying laptops and tablets so it does not use a drawstring design, but instead a more sturdy backpack design with a solid outside clasp, two inside compartments as well as an easy-to-reach inside pocket for cell phones.  We also offer it in 15 different colors.

3. What sets SackPack22 apart from other companies?

Honestly, it's our groove.  My partner and I are long-time friends and we genuinely like to have fun.  Everything is  a reflection of our cheerful and cool personalities--from the layout of our website, the funny photos and messages we post on our company Instagram and Facebook pages and its also one of the reasons we offer such a wide variety of colors, styles and mixing of materials throughout our collections.  Ultimately, we want our customers' bags to reflect their own personalities.

4. What is your favorite bag from the entire collection?

This is almost impossible to answer; I have so many.  If I had to chose only one bag, it would be the Dylan in Silver.  Whenever I walk the streets of Tel Aviv, I get loads of complements.

5.  Which bags are your best sellers and what colors do people choose most frequently?

The classic SackPack is definitely our best seller!  People love it in either grey, black or yellow.

6.  Will you be adding any new items to your collection?

Yes, we are in the process of adding the "Lenny" to our collection, which will be a very large, oversized bag worn on one shoulder.  Our customers definitely keep up with fashion and after many requests for a stylish oversized bag, we came up with a great design.   Keep an eye out for this new addition to our website within the coming weeks.

CATCHING UP WITH REASON TO BE PRETTY

Spring fashion is all about adding some color to your wardrobe. With each season, I look to my favorite designers for inspiration. When I think of bright accessories, the first designer that comes to mind is Reason To Be Pretty.  I am excited to catch up with Nophar Haimovitz, founder and designer of this amazing line.

So what's the latest with Reason To Be Pretty?

With a new website set to launch next week and a Spring line called Color Block (see photos below), Haimovitz was inspired by a recent trip to Japan.  "My upcoming Fall collection is very boho-chic.  The Fujiyama collection inspired me to make my own collection more clean, more chic.  Everything is still all hand-dyed, but the colors have been more toned down.  Instead of royal blue, for example, I'm doing a denim blue. Its very elegant and mature. "

How did you decide on colors and materials for your current collection?

I thought about colors that would look great in the Fall and that can also take you into Spring.  I chose lightweight materials for Spring.  Comfort is a huge consideration in everything I wear and sell.

How do fashion trends inspire you?

For shows and boutiques, I love showing my collection each season and I love mixing my own colors and developing new techniques that haven't been seen before, but I also love making pieces for women who want jewelry that is trending now.  I use my Etsy Store to track real-time trends.  Although tassels and fringe are trendy now, I've been working with these materials for over six years now so sometimes you follow a trend, and sometimes you create the trend.

What's next for Reason To Be Pretty, any immediate goals?
I want to expand to more stores.  I want to express that Reason to Be Pretty is a way of life, not just a brand.  Surrounding yourself with pretty things that make you happy and comfortable is what every woman deserves.

Tell me a little bit about the growth of your business. How did you make it happen? What advise would you give to emerging Israeli designers ?
It took many years to develop a feel for my own brand. In 2016, I was featured in Macys and in New York Times.  I have showrooms in Japan and America.  Things are growing.  While I continue to grow, I also help Isreali businesswomen grow their businesses. I tell them to find their own voice.  Its about how you tell your story.  It takes forever to get a breakthrough, especially in the US, but it will come.  Keep reinventing yourself every season.
Finish the sentence, Fashion is: my happy place.

MEET UKRAINIAN DESIGNER OKSANA KARAVANSKA

I had an amazing time in Chicago with my parents who came from Israel to meet their very new grandson, baby Leonix. We have done many memorable things together as this city have so much to offer! But one of the highlights that I want to share with you was taking my mom to an Ukrainian fashion show featuring Oksana Karavanska.

The show that was held at the rooftop of Godfrey with breathtaking Chicago skyline was extraordinary! The aesthetics of the collection are beautifully reflect the Ukrainian culture and traditional hand stitched embroidery while being updated with fashion forward elements.
Hair and make up complimented all looks perfectly. And incorporating denim in this couture presentation is exactly how I would style those timeless pieces to create that interesting contrast of historical culture and modern approach.

As someone who was born in Ukraine, I was so excited and proud to meet Oksana Karavanska. After all my love to fashion started from my gorgeous Mama and my roots from Ukraine.
It was so special to share this experience with my mom!

While Oksana Karavanska online shop in the development stages, you can visit her Facebook page and order directly by phone +380993148050

SHARON TAL, MEETING THE VISIONARY BEHIND THE REBIRTH OF MASKIT

It's impossible to talk about Israel’s fashion history without mentioning Maskit, Israel's first ever fashion house.
Luxury brand Maskit was originally founded in 1954 by Ruth Dyan and became a global phenomenon.  It's designs were sold at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, worn by top celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn and featured on the cover of Vogue. In 1995, after over 40 years of operation, the company went silent.
Today, 97 year-old Ruth Dyan in collaboration with the extremely talented 32 year-old Sharon Tal have brought the Maskit label back to life and are aiming to restore it's legacy.

Last week I had the honor of meeting Sharon Tal at a private event here in Chicago. The event was held at the Standard Club and was produced by the Women's Division of the Jewish United Fund and the Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago. The event featured the new head designer of the legendary Maskit, Sharon Tal.  It included a presentation by Sharon followed by a highly successful trunk show.

It was clear to me why out of many other attempts to revive Maskit, Ruth Dyan choose Sharon. She is an extraordinary person who became my new favorite icon within the first minute of our conversation.

Sharon graduated from Shenkar, and worked with major fashion houses Lanvin and Alexander McQueen. Fueled by her passion, courage and a strong identification with her roots, Sharon set out to resurrect the Maskit name. As she shared her story with the audience, people were captivated by her mission and her vision. And on top of all this, Sharon is raising 2 little girls!

When the collection was revealed, I was blown away... it was gorgeous!  The embroidery, details, luxurious fabrics and uniqueness are like nothing I have ever seen made in Israel before. It's a ready to wear line with couture materials and techniques. Sharon's collection was inspired by the vision of a multicultural Israel. The masterful techniques which she honed as the head of embroidery at McQueen's house were well showcased as she took Maskit's original designs and fused them with modern elements.

There was a magenta gown that caught my eye right away. A woman can never have too many dresses, right?! The brilliantly designed gown compliments anyone and moves magically on the body. When you come across it, please don't miss out on the opportunity, try it on!

The Egg coat is a timeless piece that every women should own. Classy, smart and effortlessly designed in various fabrics from light silks to wool and cashmere. This piece should definitely be on your next wish list.

Especially living in a winter city, investing in a quality coat is a no brainer.  If you are looking for a chic, timeless and hand-stitched coat that will last forever, look no further and invest in Maskit's Signature Iconic Desert coat.

Sharon is starting a new era not just for Maskit but for the entire fashion industry in Israel. It is a personal satisfaction to watch this unfold. From the very onset, my mission when forming Tel Aviv Couture was to support and expose Israel's incredible fashion talent to the rest of the world. I couldn't be more inspired by Sharon.

How Sharon is handling her new life mission as well as her tips to young Israeli designers are just a few of the questions she answered in our interview below.

When Sharon saw Kate Middleton walking the aisle in a McQueen dress she got depressed... because if Sharon would still be working at Alexander McQueen's house, she would be the one making this dress! That was a turning point for Sharon as she realized she wanted to go back to work.
